Putnam County, New York is seeking qualified candidates for the position of County Auditor. Applicants must meet the below required minimum qualifications and listed special requirements. The County Auditor is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the County Legislature and shall be appointed every three years.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Audits County financial accounts, records and claim vouchers. Works under general direction of the County Legislature, with considerable leeway for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate staff. Performs related work as required.

SOME TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Per the County Charter:
- Audits, supervises the auditing, and certifies for payment all claims against the County;
- Certifies the availability of funds for all requisitions, contracts, purchase orders and other documents;
- Conducts special audits deemed necessary, at the request of the Legislature;
Attends scheduled evening Legislative meetings year-round, attends all evening budget meetings in October;
Assists departments with financial matters and problems;
Conducts and participates in audits of County departments, contract agencies and programs involving County funds;
Provides statistical and financial data as needed;
Prepares audit reports containing a summary of the audit findings, comments on the same and makes recommendations for the correction of errors and adoption of better procedures;
May design new forms or formulate better accounting procedures as required;
May work on a variety of related office jobs and projects as required;
Performs a variety of related activities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either

Bachelor's degree which shall have included a minimum of twenty‑one (21) credits in accounting, and two (2) years of responsible work experience in accounting or auditing; or

Associate's degree which shall have included a minimum of twelve (12) credits in accounting, and four (4) years’ experience in accounting or auditing; or

Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma, and six (6) years of progressively responsible work experience in accounting; or

An equivalent combination of training and experience as described in a), b) and c) above

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

The County Auditor shall not engage in any private practice nor be employed in their field of expertise with the County by any private or other governmental entity.

PLEASE NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.

SALARY RANGE: $135,000 – $150,000 per year

SCHEDULE: Monday to Friday, attendance required at certain evening Legislative meetings
